"
Participating in the sustainability club was a game-changer for my academic journey. I led a project on air quality monitoring, which involved installing low-cost sensors around our school. The data we collected was crucial in advocating for reduced idling times in school zones. This hands-on research experience was pivotal in getting me accepted into the Environmental Science program at Rice. It’s fulfilling to see how my high school project evolved into significant research impacting real-world policies."

"Growing up in Maryvale [Phoenix], I always saw the need for more green spaces in our community. Through the club, I launched an initiative to convert abandoned lots into community gardens. It started as a small project, but soon local residents and businesses got involved. Seeing neighbors come together to plant vegetables and flowers was incredibly heartwarming. This inspired me to join Visionary, where I now contribute to the Phoenix chapter’s urban shading projects. It’s amazing to see how a small idea can grow into something that benefits entire communities."

"
Being part of the sustainability club allowed me to explore my passion for renewable energy. I led a project to design and build a wind turbine for our school’s science fair in Arlington. The project won first place and garnered interest from local media, which was incredibly rewarding. This experience solidified my decision to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University. Now, I’m working on innovative wind energy solutions...The club gave me the confidence and skills to pursue my dreams and make a real impact."

"
Through the club, I led a campaign to reduce single-use plastics in our cafeteria. The initiative not only caught the attention of my peers but also local businesses in Houston. As a result, I was able to secure sponsorships and launch a line of reusable products. Eventually, this project led to the creation of my own sustainable products business after graduation. Now, I develop eco-friendly alternatives to everyday products, promoting sustainability on a larger scale. The skills and network I built in the club were crucial in my business' success."

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sustainability Club virtual? How does it work?

Yes, the sustainability club is virtual, but with hands-on work and occasional in-person meetings (with the chapter it's linked to), which allows us to connect with students from across the country.

Typically, we hold biweekly meetings via Zoom every Saturday at 12pm CST, where members can share updates on their projects and collaborate on new ideas in location-specific breakouts. There are also projects that the entire club does collectively, such as the three highlighted above.

Despite being virtual, our projects are designed to have a tangible impact on our local communities. Members work on initiatives that address environmental issues specific to their geographic areas while sharing strategies and successes with the broader club.

How much time commitment is expected?

The sustainability club meets via Zoom every Saturday at 12pm CST for about an hour. In addition to meetings, members are encouraged to dedicate a few extra hours each month to work on their own research, businesses, volunteer work, and projects. We understand that students have busy schedules, so we strive to be flexible and accommodate everyone's availability. The specific time commitment can vary depending on the specific projects you choose to participate in.

How can the sustainability club benefit my goals?

The Sustainability Club is more of a mentorship than a typical club. Joining offers numerous benefits that can significantly impact your future:

    • Research opportunities: Lead projects that provide valuable hands-on research experience, which is highly regarded by colleges and universities.

    • Networking: You'll have the opportunity to connect with local businesses, environmental organizations, and community leaders, building a network that can support your future endeavors.

    • Leadership: Taking initiative in projects and organizing events helps develop strong leadership.

    • College applications: Your work demonstrates your commitment to sustainability in several novel ways, making your applications stand out.

    • Career inspiration: Engaging in sustainability projects can help you discover your passion and inspire you to pursue careers in environmental science, engineering, policy, computer science, or entrepreneurship.

What are the requirements for joining?

None, though we prefer students located in or near Visionary chapters. You will also need a computer and other project-specific materials.

The sustainability club is open to all students, regardless of their prior experience with environmental issues. We provide a supportive and inclusive environment where you can learn and grow. Our projects range from beginner to advanced levels, and there are always experienced members and advisors available to guide you. Whether you're just starting to explore sustainability or already have a strong background, there’s a place for you in our club.

Are there any costs associated with joining the club?

There are no membership fees to join the sustainability club. We occasionally host fundraising events to support our projects, and any costs associated with specific initiatives (like materials for a project) are typically covered by the funds we raise or through community sponsorships. We strive to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent any student from participating.
